PRIOR TO APPLYING FOR A PILOT VACANCY

MAKE SURE YOU ARE APPROPRIATELY QUALIFIED FOR THE POSITION

Before starting an application for a pilot position, do make sure that you meet the minimum requirements as stated in the advert;

PREPARE YOUR COVER LETTER AND CURRICULUM VITAE

A CV is a concise summary of your education, qualifications, and work experience, typically submitted alongside your job application. Ensure both documents are well-structured, clear, and tailored to the specific position to make a strong impression.

ENSURE YOU ARE THOROUGHLY KNOWLEDGEABLE AND WELL-PREPARED IN YOUR ATPL THEORY

If you are not yet confident, ensure you allocate sufficient time to prepare yourself before the ATPL assessment. The exam typically consists of 100 questions covering the 13 ATPL subjects.

TYPICAL SELECTION PROCESS

  1. Pass successfully the initial screening process
  2. Assessment of written Examination: Normally entails 100 questions from the 13 x ATPL subjects;
  3. Aptitude Test: Aptitude testing is normally conducted by utilizing internationally recognized methods such as Compass;
  4. Personal Interview: Subject to successful conclusion of the above, you will be invited to attend a personal interview. Such interview will normally include personality questions, and questions pertaining to your ab-initio training, the airline and your future position in the airline, and many more.
  5. Simulator Assessment: Most airlines will have either the simulator assessment as the last process on their pilot selection, or the personal interview.

In view of the fact that an assessment process is in essence a process of selecting the best candidate among the applicants, your success can only be assured through hard work and appropriate preparation on all elements mentioned above.

Good and competent pilots which neglect to prepare correctly for the written exams and/or the aptitude test, never make it to interview and the simulator assessment phases. Hence, side-lined by those which worked diligently and were correctly prepared.

BASIC TIPS FOR YOUR INTERVIEW

DRESS CODE

While it is advisable to dress professionally for a job interview, it is equally important to avoid underdressing. A well-fitted suit, polished shoes, and dark socks (white socks are inappropriate) constitute appropriate attire. Refrain from wearing casual uniforms, such as a student pilot uniform; instead, opt for formal business attire.

Additionally, personal grooming is essential. If you have tattoos, ensure they are discreet and covered during the interview, especially if they are visible on the forearm or other exposed areas. It is worth noting that while tattoos are acceptable for professional pilots, they must be concealed at work, so consider wearing long-sleeved shirts if necessary. The same applies to facial piercings such as eyebrow or nose piercings—they should not be visible during the interview, as they are typically not permitted in a professional setting.

For your documents, it is advisable to carry a single, organized bag—preferably a briefcase or a dark-colored handbag—rather than a backpack, to project a polished and professional image.

BE ON TIME

Punctuality is of utmost importance. If you are staying overnight near the interview location, ensure you set your iPhone alarm. Additionally, I recommend requesting a wake-up call at the hotel as a reliable backup to ensure you arrive on time.

DOCUMENTATION

Bring all necessary documents, and double-check that everything is printed and organized. Items to include are a pen, notepad, your original logbook, passport, license, and medical certificate.

IF ASKED A QUESTION YOU DON'T KNOW THE ANSWER

If you do not know the answer to a question, it is preferable to honestly admit this rather than attempting to fabricate a response. Honesty fosters trust and professionalism.

SIMULATOR ASSESSMENT

Remember that the simulator session is a key component of the assessment. It does not need to be perfect, especially if you are unfamiliar with the specific aircraft type or are feeling nervous. The focus is on your ability to learn and adapt—showing progress and resilience rather than dwelling on mistakes. As one instructor wisely noted, “Your assessment is in front of you, never behind you.
